Teaching .. a skilled and demanding profession |
| A teacher must help children achieve their potential as individuals and socially. A teacher must share knowledge, help develop skills and guide young people to increase their experience. It is a tough job for which not everyone is suited.
|
| And nowhere is it tougher than in London.
|
| The education scene in London |
| Imagine… |
| • |
32 London boroughs, each running its education service in accordance with local needs and priorities
|
| • |
A population with exceptionally diverse backgrounds – ranging from Afro-Caribbean, to Asian, Chinese and African |
| • |
Highly challenging behaviour – so that classroom management is the first key skill you will need |
| • |
Many children with deprived backgrounds or with special needs |
| • |
Regular testing and assessment of pupils as part of a longterm strategy to improve performance
|
| • |
A rapidly developing national policy of constant initiatives and change
|
| • |
A longstanding picture of under-investment and insufficient resources
|
|
| Could you cope with this?
|
| Many teachers can’t cope…
|
| Schools in England are facing the worst ever shortage of teachers. Figures show that up to 40% of teachers with three years’ experience are leaving the profession, according to the chief inspector of schools. Retirements and resignations mean that just over 30,000 teachers leave each year. |
| Shortages are felt most in London and the south east, where house prices are inflated. Inner city schools in poor areas are also at a disadvantage in recruiting teachers. Conditions in the classroom are seen as tougher and teachers tend not to live in the area. |
| Retiring teachers will make things worse. Already, around one in four teachers are
over 50. |
