Schools in England are facing the worst ever shortage of teachers. Figures show that up to 40% of teachers with three years’ experience are leaving the profession, according to the chief inspector of schools. Retirements and resignations mean that just over 30,000 teachers leave each year.
Shortages are felt most in London and the south east, where house prices are inflated. Inner city schools in poor areas are also at a disadvantage in recruiting teachers. Conditions in the classroom are seen as tougher and teachers tend not to live in the area.
Retiring teachers will make things worse. Already, around one in four teachers are over 50.
