17 Feb 2003, 9.30am: Sensational start to congestion charge
Traffic levels in the area of Renaissance Education’s office appear to be dramatically reduced on this, the first day of London’s congestion charge. The expected chaos at the Elephant & Castle roundabout did not materialise due to sheer absence of traffic. At the southern end, there appeared to be no traffic at all coming up the Walworth Road at 9am. It was possible to cross St George’s Road on foot – against the lights – at a point where hundreds of cars are normally streaming past. Outside our office, on Westminster Bridge Road – inside the zone – traffic is currently extremely light. Buses appear to be plentiful and less crowded than usual.
3pm update: Still a very quiet day on nearby roads. Traffic seems to be moving very freely and with no noticeable delays.
